Dominican Voices to be held on Saturday October 3rd, 2015 is a unique commemoration in the religious and cultural history of Arklow. The event centres on the former Dominican Abbey of Holy Cross which existed in Arklow for a total period of 275 years, from the year 1264 to 1539, when the abbey was finally suppressed. In that timespan Arklow’s Dominican Abbey witnessed many changes and historical events. In its time the abbey building became the burial place for the towns founder members of the Fitz-Walter Butler family. These were the ancestors of the great dynasty of Butler Ormond of Kilkenny who played such decisive roles throughout Ireland’s history. The abbey was also a place famous for its annual pilgrimage based on its claim to have an authentic relic of the True Cross, giving meaning to its full title ‘Holy Cross Abbey of the Friar Preachers’.
