My name is Michael Murtagh. I am not only a Mayo man but one of a long line of priests dating back to the apostles. I believe no one can be serious about following God unless he/she is willing to roll up their sleeves. Since my ordination in June 1976, I have baptised babies, I have married couples, given the sacrament of the sick, assisted at Confirmations and gloried in the innocence of First Holy communicants. In between times, I have attended meetings, visited schools, been co-opted onto committees and even helped organise car boot sales! Every year I journey to the third world (India) to work with those at the back of the queue i.e., the poorest of the poor. I believe Jesus Christ, needs disciples in the 21st century as he did in the 1st century.

I count myself blessed to be welcome in so many homes in the nine parishes I have ministered in. They remind me of the one in which I grew up in (in my native Castlebar) and of the home my parents gave me and the support my own family continue to give.

Above all I know you will agree with me when I say I count myself luck to be a Mayo supporter. Like the priesthood itself, Mayo supporters are all about optimism and hope for a wonderful future. And let us always remain young (at heart) so that Christ’s message may never grow old.
